#31 - Sing, Sing, Sing about Singapore

I love this City. It is truly a world class city. There are museums galore, neighborhoods to wander, shopping and eats, nights full of light and life and it’s amazingly clean everywhere. The subway is fast and cheap and gets you anywhere you want to go in this 270 square mile city state. There is English everywhere but at the same time there are probably four or five other languages spoken from Malay to Cantonese to Tamal. The architecture is modern and yet there are some British colonial buildings well preserved.  Last night, after learning what the National Museum had to say regarding the history of Singapore, Steve googled Wikipedia for perhaps a more objective description. This included that the Malay parliament voted to throw out Singapore after two years (not that Singapore decided on independence, as the museum said), that there were race riots and tensions in the 50’s and 60’s and that the government borders on authoritarian. #30 In our Last Week!

Hello Halong and Goodbye Vietnam An early call this AM, 7:30, to drive the almost 200 km (125 Miles) from Hanoi to Halong Bay for a one night cruise aboard a traditional but modern junk boat, the Bhaya. Another UNESCO site, Halong Bay is on the northeast coast of Vietnam with over 2,000 small islands over many square miles of water. But in true Vietnamese fashion (at least here in the North), the official island count is 1,969 because........that is the year Uncle Ho (Ho Chi Minh) died. Told you he was a big deal up here in the north, the man who reunified the country!      Sad for us as the day is misty and I am sure we will not have views nearly as spectacular as expected. #29 - Merry Xmas from SE Asia!

Well, as I sit here with Marci at the Hanoi airport, we want to wish, to all our friends who celebrate it, a very Merry  Xmas. And - to everyone - a very Happy and Healthy New Year...May you have a prosperous and peaceful 2018! Since we don't arrive in Singapore until after midnight  we might need a day off, so enjoy these pix taken over the  course of the trip. Steve
