August 8 - Up Up and Higher Still to 8800 Feet

A blink through Slovakia

Today we left for the High Tatras, about four hours from Budapest and a convenient stop on the way to Krakow. You probably never heard of these mountains, you may not even know that Slovakia used to be the other half of the Czech Republic, hence Czechoslovakia, from our childhood.

The directions said four hours, translated to Schwartz, six or seven hours because the journey is part of the fun. The roads were small and winding climbing higher and higher. A quick lunch stop in a mountain village, whose name is not memorable, but whose pizza is, unfortunately. But we didn't know that til later; we only had it with veggies.

.....in the middle of nowhere, but of course, Free WiFi.....

We arrived in this tiny alpinish village, home of summer hikers and winter skiers with the ski runs and dramatic cliffs as a background. Now this town is tiny with nothing more than about 15 small pensions and one grand old hotel that looked a bit faded and smelly on line. Our choice was the Tatrasport Zampas and looked a bit like a chalet. All they had was an economy room that turned out to be totally new, cleaner than most places, and modern beyond expectations, all for a whopping 62 Euro including tax and breakfast. It was a bit too late to take the cable up the mountain and hike to the waterfall. So off for a walk in town where we came upon a slightly corny but very authentic Slovakian folk dancing.

We were tired and a bit thirsty and all of a sudden neither of us felt very well. The rest of the day is not bloggable but we are so happy the bathroom is really nice here

and really unhappy we stopped for that pizza.

August 3. West, East or Central??? Where the Hell is Vienna?

West, East or Central??? Where the Hell is Vienna? Aside from the fact that it is approximately three hours and fifteen minutes from Cesky Krumlov, Vienna, it turns out, is technically in Western Europe, even though Austria makes its appearance in Rick Steve's Eastern European book and people who live in Czech, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia are Central European.  In fact, it is almost offensive to call them or their country Eastern European, as that is clearly only for the old Soviet bloc.  We made a few stops along the way, taking the scenic way past a magnificent very long lake, and over beautiful mountains with rolling fields of crop and grain, not quite the Sound of Music Austria, but not too far off. Crossing from Czech to Austria in the EU of today entailed no more than driving past the old vacant border patrol building.  We checked into our hotel, just a couple blocks outside the busy Ringstrasse and next to the Rathaus, and sank into our air conditioned room,...

#118 - It’s Sunny and HOT in Paree

Dinner last night was just a ten minute walk, following the Marci school of city touring which says : “run around all day, anywhere you want, take public transit everywhere, but once you are back at your hotel, be it 6 or 7 or even 8pm, just walk close by for dinner”. I always pick the neighborhood to stay in first and then I pick my hotel. I don’t mind running all day, but once the day is done I want to be near lots of good places to eat dinner.  Astier, a bistro in the 11th, qualified on the location and the Good Eats. Again, the food sounded simple, like my beet gaspacho with crunchy veggies. The deep purple was rich looking and the flavors layered and fresh.  Steve started with the pickled herring and I think he was quite surprised when the waiter delivered and LEFT on the table a  quite large glazed terracotta container of herring, a serving spoon and fork, a bowl of small potatoes and a basket of bread.  Then he left. Clearly this was an all-you-can-...

#120 - SURPRISE....ONE LAST READ WITH YOUR MORNING COFFEE

Did you think we wouldn't do a wrap up - the woulda, shoulda, coulda list along with our very salient observations of the current state of fashion, food, and fun in France and Spain?   Well, we got a bit sidetracked. So here is the last of Paris and the rest of the Euro 2019 blog.  Our last night in Paris, Laurent returned and we had a dinner at Eels as planned. About a thirty minute walk (perfect, since once we are home I can't get Steve walking at all) but it was raining, so we hopped in an Uber and headed over to the 10th arrondissement in heavy traffic.  Rather than describe the great five course chef tasting menu we did- here it is in photos.  Everything was excellent, especially the bottle of Pinot Noir- too bad it was their last one and we had to switch wines for the next bottle - but that is the only criticism.   The next morning we were packed, said our goodbyes, and were off to the airport for our non-stop to Dulles...
